The Jaws of Biervliet
Back when Terneuzen didn´t even exist, the nearby town of Biervliet already had rights. Because of its favorable location on the water of the Braakman (Then the connection between the sea and the city of Ghent) Biervliet, in the Middle Ages, was a thriving commercial city.
Now Biervliet a historic place with five bastions and many monumental buildings. The main attractions: the Dutch Reformed Church in 1659 with such beautiful stained glass windows, the Cornmill 'De Harmonie' in 1842, the former priest from the 17th century and the 'Old Raedthuys from the 19th century with a herring in the weathervane.
There is a reason why the wind indicator has this image. The most famous resident is William Beukelszoon, the inventor of the gutting of herring. So it preserves longer and sailors could stay out on see longer.
De Braakman
De Braakman, located just 3 km from Biervliet at a former creek area.
The current form was created in 1952. Just before the great flood of 1953 the area was drained. It was the first "exam" of the later called Delta Works.
At the time there was created almost 200 hectares of forest - and nature. Meanwhile there is added 300 acres. The Braakman has therefore become one of the largest nature areas of South Flanders.
The area includes vast forests, thickets, open land and water.
The dune vegetation of the Braakman valley is unique in the Netherlands. We grow plants as Parnassia, creeping willow, sea-green sedge, marsh helleborine, broadleaf helleborine and Listera ovata, Dactylorhiza incarnata. Furthermore, many species of birds come here, including the Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Garganey, tufted duck, black-tailed godwit, lapwing and redshank.
